About the Armchair

Armchair Slash is a Yahoo!group mailing list formed to discuss Harry/Draco fics and authors in the Harry Potter fandom.? We are also a website, a message board, and a general fandom community.? Every month we select a different writer of H/D fanfics and discuss their work.

Where we came from:

The Armchair began as a part of the yahoo group Draco_101. Draco_101 was founded in early 2002 to house the much-loved fic Resolution by fellow H/D author Frances Potter

Not long after, Fran invited Aja to join her, and for a few months Love Under Will and Resolution were hosted together.

Eventually, due to the popularity of Resolution and the time constraints of running two mailing lists, Fran decided to consolidate her two fic lists into a new list, .

Aja wanted to repay her karmic debt to Fran by forming a new list as well, one that would host not only her own fics, but those of talented new authors.

The name Armchair_Slash is homage to a piece of furniture that features prominently in the first part of LUW. Friends warned Aja that if she named her list Armchair_Slash she would regret it eternally, but she had grown fond of the name and the list was duly christened.? She has, in fact, never regretted it.

The Armchair's first featured Author Of The Month was Penguin.? A string of talented authors followed, and in June Maya, author of Underwater Light and a host of superb fics, signed on as the list's second permanent featured author.

At the time of its inception the Armchair was home to about a hundred members, or 'Armchairers.' In a little under a year that number sprang to over a thousand, and now, 18 months after its inception, that number has doubled and the list is still growing.

What We Do:

In addition to hosting the fics of Maya and Aja, the Armchair is home to weekly chats--every Sunday, noon EST--a variety of fanfic challenges, and wide-ranging discussion about the H/D ship and our favorite H/D fanfics and writers.? In July 2003, The Armchair was a featured sponsor of Nimbus 2003, the world's first international academic and fan symposium on the Harry Potter series.? Armchairers raised over a thousand dollars to help fund activities at the convention, including a midnight double feature of the movies and a panel on fandom linguistics--a fitting choice, since the term 'armchairing' has itself become a fandom term referring to the weekly Sunday chats.

We're a warmhearted, spirited little list, and we are constantly seeking to improve ourselves. We have three primary objectives as a list: to get the word out on all the wonderful and talented authors we feature; to involve our members as much as possible in our activities, and give them a welcome corner of the fandom to play in; and above all, to celebrate the love of Harry/Draco fics, writers, and readers--because that's why we're here, after all. :)

Feel free to join us and play along!
