moving in
hey, my first update!!!
To everybody who asked about having trouble with LJ syndicating this as an RSS feed, I think that might be fixed. You can try it again. Or not.
I am trying to determine whether using the Sage extension to aggregate LJ posts from my friends would be cheating. It would not be actively using LJ, but a passive use just the same. :/ Since I’m going to be required to go to LJ in the near future anyway just to relocate posts and sort and organize, settling for not actively linking or using the site may be the best I can hope to do. :/
If anyone has been leery of wordpress - come on in, the water’s fine!
Here are things I like about it so far:
- the presentation and site scheme are really nice and relatively intuitive. i have found my learning curve to be nicely paced.
- the post section! it is really really perfect for archiving and cataloguing old LJ posts without actually having to post and backlog them. it functions far better as an organizing tool than LJ memories. I keep going to my sidebar and beaming at it. and it works better than tags on an LJ sidebar because you can structure them categorically on the page, spatially, and not just by tagging things with related keywords. I have to say, it is very exciting!
- you can suscribe to wordpress tags just like on delicious, so if i want to see what anyone on wordpress has tagged “tezuryo” all i have to do is click on “tagsurfer.” also, they have really convenient widgets which i have not yet installed, but the “add to delicious” widget is very nice.
- all of the basic post options of LJ are also standard for WP, or appear to be. I have yet to figure out how a ping works! I hope someone pings me so I can find out!!!
now, here is what i absolutely hate hate hate:
- WHEN SOMEONE COMMENTS TO YOU WHILE LOGGED IN TO WORDPRESS, THE ONLY INDICATION YOU HAVE THAT THEY ARE LOGGED INTO THEIR WP ACCOUNT IS THE LITTLE ICON BY THEIR COMMENT.
can you go to their wordpress account from that comment? NO. Can you conveniently click on their icon and be taken there? NO. DO YOU HAVE TO PAINSTAKINGLY OPEN A NEW TAB AND TYPE IN THEIR FULL WORDPRESS ACCOUNT? YES.
REALLY I HAVE NO WORDS FOR HOW IDIOTIC THAT IS. - You cannot thread a reply to someone who has replied to you!!!!!!!!
obviously this is a horrible blogging phenomenon no matter what non-LJ site you are on, but really! You cannot reply directly to someone who has replied to you! it is just as frustrating as i feared it would be!
Oh, you can go to “My comments” and see comments you have left for other people, and there you can click “reply to this thread.” But that only shows you “your comment, one before yours, and replies after yours.”
So: if the person who replied to you was lucky enough to post their reply to you immediately after you commented to them, and not, say, three or for comments behind other people; and if you are likewise lucky enough to re-reply to them immediately after they commented back to you, you will be able to SEE THEIR REPLY TO YOU ON THE MY COMMENTS PAGE. At which point, if you click “reply to this thread,” you might be lucky enough to re-reply to them where they can actually see it.
That is the most insane way of threading comments I have ever heard. Why on earth did the Powers That Blog think that being able to thread comment replies was a non-essential blogging tool?
Other things I am a bit eyebrowface about are the way you have to “add spaces” to your subjects in order to tag them. if you decide to go back and put something in at the top of a category you have to go back in and give everything else after it an additional space! how annoying! Also, when you add someone with a wordpress to your blogroll, they do not automatically get added to the “blogsurfer” list of wordpress people whose posts you wish to read! would you not think that would be a no-brainer? I would think so. Except I also think threaded comment replies would be a no-brainer, so what do I know.
To do: finish relocating the prince of tennis guide and the other fandom guides. After that I will probably start relocating all my fanfic here. Which will be a hassle, but the idea of having it all organized by fandom and length under posts is very very enticing. i hope that you can backdate blog posts here.
Moving in is hard work. But exciting, too.

Just checking how this whole thing works. God, so weird after LJ and all its clones.
Reply: HI HI HI :D
So I just have to keep checking back for replies or do the RSS thing. Er. Methinks I am too lazy for Wordpress. Especially since I don’t actually do a great deal of posting, just commenting.
Oh, wait, I just found the page where it keeps track of my comments that I’ve left. Hm.
Anyway, HI TO YOU AS WELL. :D
this is crazy talk, it keeps making me moderate comments no matter how many times i go back and uncheck all the things you are supposed to check in order to not have to moderate comments!!!!!!
i agree with you about laziness. it is so much work to find comments! i really like the layout and the “pages” functionality, though. :/ i feel so isolated from everyone. i will never be able to do a meme here. i feel like such a little kid, wanting to keep my retarded toys.
I think, if you can use plugins, there is a plugin for threaded comments so you can have your LJ system of threading back. Though, I’m not sure if it minimizes them when you have 5.2 billion of them as you usually do. j/k
reply! Hi, Amber!!!!! I am not sure if there are plugins or not - I found a bunch for comments thanks to Qem’s link below, but none for threading. I will keep looking. :D
There should be a plugin that lets you fix the username linked to blog issue….
But I wouldn’t know where to find it…
These are about the only plug ins I know.
http://mashable.com/2007/07/24/wordpress-comments/
I think it’s because they don’t think of blogging as part of social networking but as broadcasting your words to the whole wide world.
I do know that there are things other than LJ that are capable of threading replies though…
______
reply: and that’s really the crux of it, right? That LJ was founded on the idea of community interaction, which other blogsites just don’t have. They also seem to think that anyone posting a link in comments needs to be filtered as spam. D: I KNOW YOU ARE NOT SPAM, QEM, HAVE NO FEAR. Thank you, btw, that is extremely helpful, and I had no idea where to look. I haven’t found an extension for threading yet, but I will. :)
Part of the problem is that LJ is a community orientated system. It’s designed for social interaction. Wordpress is primarily designed as a journaling/blogging system. But you should try browsing the plug-in databases; I’m sure there’s something that’d be useful for comments.
plug-ins are kind of scary. i’m all about the aesthetics of this place, but the widgets and plug-ins and things are considerably daunting. however, it can’t be any more difficult than LJ was to learn. :))
I like this place because it’s pretty and such, but still. It doesn’t feel like home. lol I deal well not with change, I guess. XD
i understand totally. i imagine nothing will ever feel like home the way LJ did, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make this place feel like - oh, a breezy summer resort. :D
…there’s a comment plugin to enable YM smileys. QEM WHAT HAVE YOU DONE.
Considering all the bitching I did about ljfandom overdoing the “community” stuff, I should love this environment, but I’m with absinthefairy: it feels a bit weird somehow.
toko
(who keeps finding his username already taken, dammit)
what does toko even mean, anyhow? have i ever asked you this. arriviste is nice, though! it is very sophistique. I did not see a YM smiley plugin! where was it! where! i must know!
i did not know that you bitched about lj overdoing the community environment. scrooge. “The author does not say much about himself.” <— you should make a post tagged “hikago” or “akira/hikaru” because as far as i can tell, there are exactly zero posts on all of wordpress with either of these tags. this is a shame. :(
now i am off to ponder the question: to subscribe to tag “kirk/spock” or not to subscribe. :|
The smiley plugin was one of the plugins on the list Qem linked to. Here.
No WordPress love for Hikago? Outrageous. Something must be done about this. DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO THE KIRK/SPOCK. STAY AWAY FROM THE MADNESS.
now you tell me. you missed that boat by about three weeks, mister. :/
there must be love for hikago! and also tezuryo! will you help me spread it. tezuka could use more love. :(
THIS IS THE MOST INCONVENIENT THING YOU’VE EVER DONE. I’ve revamped my Google just for your feed.
I KNOW :(( IT STILL WILL NOT LET ME MOVE AWAY FROM MODERATED COMMENTS. I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING, IT JUST KEEPS REVERTING BACK AND MAKING ME MODERATE THEM! I DO NOT WANT TO MODERATE COMMENTS, WORDPRESS DASHBOARD, YOU MORON!
I have no idea how to even *use* rss feeds. :| i will need to use them soon but every time i have tried them in the past i have just gotten long unfriendly blocks of text that i could not read.
Brian’s Threaded Comments is the plugin I used to get comments looking nice on my fic site. I’m assuming you’d be able to install it with a WP-hosted blog?
Still trying to find a way to make sure people get comment reply notifications when I do threaded replies, though. :\
Oh hay it helps if I log in at WP, too.
I just wish that, after trying to upload an avatar three times, it would actually show up in my profile. GRRRR.
i just had to keep uploading mine repeatedly. D: i have no idea how i got it to finally work :((
LOOK AT ME. ON WORDPRESS. THE THINGS I DO FOR YOU.
sjdfjsaklfadsj;lkfadskfkj ANNA. every time i come back here i have to approve comments. i cannot spend my life approving comments that i cannot even reply to! how do i turn it off adsklfjla;dfjdka;ljfldfjd
:( i am happy you are here. :((! RACH IS HERE TOO.
How in the world do I reply to your reply. This is so hard to use 8-X AND MY AVATAR DOES NOT SHOW UP. WORST SITE EVER.
_______
you have to comment below it and hope that no one comments in between us!!!!!!!
I HAD TO UPLOAD AN AVATAR LIKE SIX TIMES BEFORE IT TOOK. I DO NOT THINK IT IS EVER GOING TO LET ME TURN COMMENT MODERATION OFF.
DO I HAVE TO KEEP CHECKING COMMENTS. HAVE THEY NOT HEARD OF EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS.
*CRIES*
Your wordpress blog is so gorgeous. I keep meaning to do things with the layout of mine and then forgetting.
oh, thank you! CAN YOU TELL ME HOW TO TURN OFF COMMENT MODERATION I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING SHORT OF PRAYER :((
This place is confusing the heck out of me. @__@ But um, glad you’re settling in fine. <3 Wondering if you got my email? :D?
Nevermind. Saw your comment on Kish’s.
AND OMG THIS PLACE IS DRIVING ME ABSOLUTELY CRAZY FOR THE SAME REASONS YOU POINTED OUT. DX
IT’S LIKE HOPPING INTO A GETAWAY CAR THAT ONLY WORKS IN REVERSE
I see I am still awaiting moderation.
FINALLY I HAVE FIGURED OUT HOW TO UNMODERATE COMMENTS ANNA DJKL;AFSD.
i was seriously about to cry, i had 8 comments to approve this morning, i was like, I CANNOT LIVE LIKE THIS
I was going to name this account “gayfootmasseuse” before reading about having to constantly type in entire usernames over and over again, so it is good I read this post first!
I also feel I have preserved a modicum of my dignity this way.
Anyway hi Aja! I am glad I stumbled upon the blog you will actually be updating (because I am reading-challenged apparently and thought jf was going to be your primary home from now on…).
I hope the move is going well thus far! :)
i did not really clarify it! i was like EVERYONE SHOULD MOVE TO JOURNALFEN BECAUSE IT IS SAFEST! *moves to wordpress* i am a moron.
granted, i really wanted to transition over to a more professional, blogosphere-type atmosphere in a way; and journalfen is too much “the place where i go to wank” to ever *not* be.
then again, i realy don’t think it’s possible for me to be “professional.” i keep trying to imagine my grown-up professional, writerly blog without yahoo emoticons. :( i know this will never happen
I REALLY MISS YOU, I NEARLY EMAILED YOU HALF AN HOUR AGO AND HERE YOU ARE! CLEARLY I CALLED YOU TO ME WITH MY MIND. :D
hahaha, clearly the solution to all this business re: professionalism is to become a super famous novelist and then push the existing “professional, writerly” model into a new paradigm, where yahoo emoticons are a token of extreme cultural relevance. or…something.
I AM ON Y!M RIGHT NOW WHY DON’T YOU COME ON Y!M RIGHT NOW! ALSO WHOA COINCIDENCE I ALMOST EMAILED YOU YESTERDAY TOO ACTUALLY, BUT IT WAS GOING TO BE ALL “PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TALK ABOUT MONSTER WITH ME” AND THAT FELT UNBELIEVABLY INSENSITIVE IDK. but even if it is not to talk about monster i really really want to talk to you, yes!
I HATE NOT BEING ABLE TO JUST CLICK A LINK AND DIRECTLY REPLY TO YOU! GOD! editing is the best i can do. i hope you see your retardedly edited post, which i feel is still less retarded-looking than commenting right below a person. anyway. MONSTER!!!!!!!! you have seen it all? i have not seen it all, only read the manga. (yeah, yeah). but OMG MONSTER!!!!!!
i am not on y!m right now becuase i am still at work, and can i just say that i *HATE* it when POs SCHEDULE KIDS WITHOUT, OH, *LOOKING* AT THE SCHEDULE FIRST.
I SEE MY EDITED POST. I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO EDIT IT THOUGH SO I AM GOING TO COMMENT BELOW ANYWAY. Hopefully one day I will have this site all figured out and use it as fluently as I use livejournal. Today is not that day.
I am on episode 45, I started watching from episode 40 because that is where the translated manga is in the US and it is getting SO EXCITING and I just couldn’t stand waiting ANY LONGER for the rest of it, and it finally occurred to me that since the ENTIRE ANIME is online, there is absolutely no reason for me to put myself through the pain of waiting.
AND I AM SO GLAD I DECIDED TO STOP PUTTING MYSELF THROUGH THE PAIN OF WAITING. BECAUSE AS EXCITING AS THE MANGA WAS PRE-EPISODE 40, POST-EPISODE 40 JUST GETS BETTER AND BETTER WITH EVERY NEW TWIST. ahhh i just got to the part where a certain character’s parent took off a certain accessory to expose a certain very evil side and I am not sure if it is because she is in fact the certain character in drag or is just the Czechoslovakian Twoface and I probably didn’t do a good job of shielding any innocent passerby from series spoilers in that sentence but the point is HOLY FUCK HOLY FUCK HOLY FUCK is basically how I’m feeling right now. I love everything about the series so far and am working to get everyone around me to watch it so they can talk about it with me. THANK YOU FOR RECOMMENDING !!!!!
Your work situation sounds incredibly shitty atm. >:( This is not okay.
I have tried to syndicate this at GJ for the umpteenth time with no success. :((((
HELLO AJA.
GOOD LORD, AJA.
I wonder if the influx of LJ people will put pressure on Wordpress to figure out their comments into some kind of threading system…
oy. i created this blog thing a while ago when i last got pissed off at LJ (before strikethrough ‘07), and then never used it. i had forgotten why not, but now i remember: it is substandard compared to what i am used to. i agree with you about the things you like — they are indeed very nice.
but: threaded comments are a must. i know the blogging world loves their flat comment threads, but i’ve used threaded comments for 20+ years, dammit, and i am not going back to the stone ages while every blogging company takes 5 years to reinvent the wheel. and no, you can’t install the plugin referred to above; this site doesn’t provide for that. it would be difficult for them to write the themes so they’d work with all sorts of plugins, so you don’t get that. maybe one could do some wizardry with CSS, but to actually save your own CSS here you have to pay.
the documentation is very muddled as to what’s possible to do on this site versus what’s possible with wordpress, the software package you can install on your own host in general. after i browsed through a bunch of pages i figured that they were too interconnected and started looking at the forums for info instead.
if you need help, those forums are of good use for a beginner, and at least you can search them (that’s how i found out you can’t use that plugin).
i like wordpress, the software itself, but i will probably have to roll my own to be happy.
